Smart business in today’s marketplace means becoming connected. Whether it’s adopting enterprise-ready mobile devices and productivity solutions, tracking assets to add visibility into processes and supply chains, or creating new data streams by adding sensors to the factory floor, the need to simplify operations, leverage decisionmaking data about workflows and processes, and empower mobile workforces is key for today’s enterprises.

Zebra Technologies Corp.,, a provider of products and services that provide realtime visibility into assets, people, and transactions, commissioned a survey by research and consulting firm Forrester,, that the company recently presented at ProMat 2015 in Chicago, Ill. The survey discovered a whopping majority—96%—of transportation and logistics companies believe the IoT (Internet of Things) is the most strategic technological initiative their organization will undertake during this decade.

What’s more, Zebra says 90% of these have deployed or plan to deploy IoT solutions within the next year. This survey sample suggests the IoT is a transformative force in the transportation and logistics industries—and it’s about to become even more so. Specific IoT technologies spurring growth include Wi-Fi, security sensors, NFC (near-field communication), and realtime locating systems.

The Forrester/Zebra research also found 51% of respondents expect the IoT to improve regulatory compliance and delivery processes, 45% expect the IoT to help improve safety, and 44% expect the IoT to help them recognize cost efficiencies and improve critical supply chain visibility. Privacy and security concerns topped the list of concerns survey respondents have about the IoT, closely followed by implementation complexity.

While it’s no secret the IoT has the potential to transform the enterprise, this survey demonstrates just how vital the IoT will be to the future of transportation and logistics. By providing the kinds of actionable data these industries rely on, IoT solutions can empower companies to gain the intelligence needed to take their businesses to the next level.
