A new TSN (time-sensitive networking) testbed will help deliver a network infrastructure to support the future of the IIoT (industrial Internet of Things).
NI, www.ni.com, a provider of platform-based test systems, has announced a collaboration with the IIC (Industrial Internet Consortium), www.iiconsortium.org, along with several industry leaders, to develop the TSN testbed. Participating organizations include Bosch Rexroth, www.boschrexroth.com, Cisco, www.cisco.com, Intel, www.intel.com, KUKA, www.kuka.com, Schneider Electric, www.schneider-electric.com, and TTTech, www.tttech.com.
NI says the testbed will combine different critical control traffic and best-effort traffic flows on a single, resilient network based on IEEE 802.1 TSN standards; demonstrate TSN’s realtime capability and vendor interoperability using standard, converged Ethernet; assess the security value of TSN and provide feedback on the ability to secure initial TSN functions; demonstrate ability for the IIoT to incorporate high-performance and latency-sensitive applications; and deliver integration points for smart realtime edge cloud control systems into IIoT infrastructure and application.
The organizations aim to advance the network infrastructure in a way that will support the future of the IIoT. Specifically, the testbed will help by displaying the value of new IEEE 802 TSN standards in an ecosystem of manufacturing applications. Richard Soley, executive director of the IIC, says testbeds are where innovation in the industrial Internet is initiated. By facilitating standardized and open communication, the IIC TSN testbed will promote innovation as well as vendor interoperability and the exchanging of data within an IIoT infrastructure.
