Tier 1 Automotive Parts Manufacturer Acquires Startup Behind First Smart Commuter Bicycle
(Toronto) – April 20, 2017—Warren Industries Ltd., a Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive parts manufacturer, announces the acquisition of Vanhawks, a Toronto-based startup and creator of the world’s first smart commuter bicycle, the Valour. Featuring integrations including Bluetooth connectivity for the Valour to receive turn-by-turn smartphone navigation, relayed to the rider through flashing LED lights built into the handlebars, and automatic ride metrics to track a rider’s performance and improve smart navigation in the future, the Valour is radically enhancing the urban commute. The partnership marks the start of a new strategic chapter for both companies, allowing Vanhawks to grow its customer support and product development teams and diversifying the portfolio of Warren Industries.
“Innovation by design and working to create a safer ride for our passengers are two of the cornerstones of Warren Industries’ operations, and we have found an ideological equal in Vanhawks,” said David Freedman, President and CEO, Warren Industries. “This partnership will allow both Warren Industries and Vanhawks to play a bigger role in driving new trends in urban transportation and development in the right direction.”
Warren Industries is a privately-owned corporation based in Vaughan, Ontario with a global presence, hosting operations facilities in Mexico and China. Over the past nearly three decades, the company has evolved from a Tier 2 manufacturer to a Tier 1 supplier, stamping transmission components and crafting innovative solutions. Warren Industries holds several proprietary patents for mechanical devices including a vehicle door control system and also operates an Innovation and Technology Centre, engineering products for the automotive, consumer products and healthcare industries related to vehicle connectivity and safety.
“The resources, insights and technologies that Warren Industries holds in the automotive industry will be invaluable as we prepare to enter the next stage of Vanhawks’ already explosive growth,” said Sohaib Zahid, CEO, Vanhawks. “Their strengths perfectly complement our business needs and we look forward to what we can accomplish with such a strong partner.”
The Vanhawks Valour network currently has riders in over 42 countries, with nearly 1,000 bikes sold and growing following a wildly successful launch in 2014. The Valour is designed to offer a safer, smoother ride for commuters, featuring integrated head and tail lights for constant visibility in addition to turn by turn navigation. Customer service is a primary focus for the company, with in-app support providing riders with assistance at all stages of their daily commute and a newly improved shipping window of three to five days’ time from point of purchase.
The acquisition of Vanhawks marks the first by Warren Industries, diversifying its roster of manufacturing innovations. Warren Industries is currently focused on developing proprietary automotive parts within their Innovation & Technology Center.
