Technology Drives the Future of Work

One of the most eye-opening questions and responses from our recent Worker of Tomorrow study is what currently keeps workers in their current position. Why do workers choose to stay where they are? Naturally, the answers vary, but what tops the list paints an interesting picture of where we are headed with the future of work.

In our study we break this down by overall findings and by different vertical markets such as construction and manufacturing. Looking specifically at the construction vertical market we find there are eight reasons why construction workers stay in their current position.

Technology is one of the leading factors for many construction workers. As the world continues to evolve, the research reveals technology is leading the charge to help drive the world forward. These technologies can vary and include AI (artificial intelligence), robotics, backoffice software, and so much more.

The bottomline is technology makes a construction jobsite more efficient, safer, and ultimately delivers a better project. For project owners, data becomes king on the project, providing all the insights needed to make well informed decisions in realtime.

One example is Projectmates, which is a suite of tools to improve document management, budgeting, scheduling, change order tracking, and risk assessment, just to name a few. The technology gives project owners the ability to track and report on program and project progress, status, changes, and issues.

Last year, the company was acquired by Hexagon, complementing its portfolio of products. Joining Hexagon will help expand Projectmates ongoing business to deliver greater benefits to the project owner. Owners will be able to increase productivity, operational efficiency, credentialing capability, and customer satisfaction, just to name a few. Today, Projectmates is operating as part of Hexagon’s Geosystems division.

Looking to the future of work, if we want to address the worker shortage, we must consider technology and we must consider what tomorrow’s worker wants. Companies must take data and turn it into better outcomes. They must learn the wants and needs of each worker to set up a business for future success.

A common thread across all of this is in fact technology. The age of information is ushering in a new era where data is king for the project owner. The best companies need to think strategically and apply technology across the business.

We know the opportunities are endless. We must start by understanding the worker, identifying where the future of work is headed, and then applying the right technology for the job. We need to take that first step forward if we want to make lasting change happen.
