Here at Constructech, we focus primarily on the construction industry and how market and technology trends impact this space. But the reality is contractors must work in tandem with other areas of the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) industry in order to build homes, buildings, and infrastructure.
For instance, interior design trends will often drive what contractors are building. Consider sustainability as an example. A drive for greater sustainability in buildings and homes means contractors must source new materials and install new technologies in order to meet the needs of homeowners and building owners.
In order to dig a bit deeper, let’s look at one new report that provides some insights about changes in wellness, technology, the workforce, design, the economy, and how it will ultimately shape construction.
In January, the American Society of Interior Designers released its 2025 Trends Outlook report. Some of the top trends to consider here include the following.
Neuro-inclusive design: Neuroscience is driving new design elements, creating environments that positively influence brain function and behavior. Along similar lines, we are also seeing more toxin-free materials and wellness-driven features like circadian-friendly lighting—something we have written about here at Constructech many times.
Outdoor living: The wellness trend extends from indoors to outdoors, which is another big movement to watch. Outdoor kitchens, dining areas, living areas, and more are creating a connection to nature. We also see more durable outdoor textures being combined with indoor aesthetics, creating hybrid spaces.
Multigenerational workforce dynamics: 75% of Gen Z is planning to start their own business—and many in this generation are pursuing opportunities in the internet economy. Yet this generation is also facing financial struggles. The workforce now includes Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z—and businesses must navigate all working styles and bridge the generational divide. Also, keep an eye on the trend toward alternative education pathways.
Integration of technologies: The technology trend spreads wide and far. Certainly, designers and contractors are using technologies to envision and manage the process of creating a space. But technologies are also going into the spaces themselves. In residential construction, sustainability and energy efficiency are big, as home monitoring and smart appliances surge. In commercial construction, we will see the rise of AI (artificial intelligence) and automation to improve productivity and personalize guest services, just to name a few.
Certainly, these are just a few trends to consider. What else would you add? What are you seeing in your own business? How is the design of homes and buildings continuing to evolve? How does the integration of technology ultimately impact how we design and build a project? There is much to consider as we move forward into a new era of construction.
