From health and wellness to safety and security to energy efficiency, the right lighting provides so many benefits to today’s homeowner. A certain amount and the type of lighting can sync people’s bodies to the right circadian rhythm, while also creating the mood and ambiance that homeowners want. So now that we know this, it begs the question: When building a new home or retrofitting an existing home, do people consider smart-lighting solutions?
Research shows 13% of U.S. households have a smart light bulb and 6% have a smart-lighting control system. Now, keep in mind in this research, 1% is about equal to 1 million households, according to Parks Associates. So, while the percentage is smaller than some other widely used technologies—ie: smartphones—we do see there is gaining interest among homeowners to consider smart-lighting solutions in homes.
At the same time, we see more and more homebuilders constructing homes with such technologies already preinstalled for homebuyers, as builders recognize the value smart-lighting solutions provides the homeowner and that smart-home technologies in general can help builders be more competitive in the market.
Let’s look at one example. Stone Martin Builders is currently building more than 45 communities in Alabama and Georgia, with a focus on livability, functionality, energy-efficient construction materials, and methods that deliver energy savings to homeowners.
The homebuilder additionally wants to give its customers the option of choice, as it is installing modular light switches in thousands of homes in Alabama and Georgia. This type of modular lighting system enables homeowners to have greater customization opportunities, even after the home is built, providing a future proof home that can be updated and changed as technologies and preferences change.
Taking a closer look, we see every Stone Martin Home will have 19 Deako Smart Switches and Smart Dimmers, four Simple Motion Sensor Switches, and two Simple Ceiling Fan Controllers, in addition to Deako’s regular on/off simple rocker switches to complete the home. The benefit here is that once the home is finished being built homeowners can swap in and out different light switches without needing to call an electrician.
The smart-lighting technology also provides the sustainability component and energy-efficient benefits that we always are talking about here at Specialty Publishing. Each smart switch can be customized with scenes and timers that are energy efficient along with schedule settings that can improve home safety and security.
