Wearable devices have been on the rise for years—but now we are seeing new features and advanced AI (artificial intelligence) technologies focused on helping adults age-in-place.
For example, Bay Alarm Medical recently announced the addition of automatic fall detection to its smartwatch. The company suggests few medical alert watches on the market include automatic fall detection because wearing the watch on the wrist has historically made it prone to false alarms. But this company’s latest version of the SOS Smartwatch uses AI.
When a fall is detected by the smart fall detection algorithm, the SOS Smartwatch checks in with an intelligent, cloud-based machine learning engine. If the intelligent engine detects a real fall, the SOS Smartwatch will ask the wearer if they’ve fallen. If the wearer does not respond, or confirms the fall, a call is immediately initiated to Bay Alarm Medical’s always-operational emergency dispatch center.
This is a standalone medical alert system that does not need to be paired with a smartphone. In addition to its smart fall detection capabilities, the watch includes a 4G cellular connection and GPS. This allows the wearer to get emergency help anywhere with an AT&T cellular signal and allows Bay Alarm Medical’s emergency operators to know the wearer’s precise location where they need help.
Here is how this can help:
- Accurately recognize falls.
- Filter out false alarms.
- Assure help from Bay Alarm Medical’s call center agents.
Looking to the future, this type of technology will help adults age-in-place, giving them the technology they need to be monitored at home.
