    Digital Transformation Starts with Data

    The conversation around digital transformation has evolved a lot in the past decade. We began by digitizing drawings and leaning into CAD (computer-aided design). Then we embraced BIM (building information modeling). Next came digital twins, connecting the physical and digital worlds in ways we could only imagine years ago.

    Then we saw explosive growth of data in many vertical industries such as construction, utilities, infrastructure, and manufacturing, just to name a few. Today, we stand at yet another turning point. The question is no longer whether organizations should collect more data. The real question is this: How can businesses unlock the value of the data they already own?

    This is where the next phase of digital transformation begins and the emergence of MCP (model context protocol), AI (artificial intelligence), copilots, and digital twins will play a very important role. Some question whether this will stand the test of time; others are betting the farm this will work. At the end of the day, it’s all about connecting the data dots.

    The next step in digital transformation will be for organizations to connect information across existing systems without starting over. Rather than replacing years of investments, these technologies can build upon them, creating new intelligence from data that often sits isolated in engineering files, maintenance systems, operational databases, and enterprise software.

    Manufacturing companies can connect engineering knowledge with factory operations. Utilities can bring together asset information and field operations. Transportation agencies and rail operators can combine infrastructure data with maintenance records to improve reliability and resilience. Cities can connect departments that historically operated independently. Every industry has accumulated valuable institutional knowledge. The organizations that thrive will be those that transform that knowledge into actionable intelligence.

    BIM remains an important foundation, particularly for infrastructure, buildings, and rail. In many ways, rail represents a natural evolution because it combines long-life assets, operational complexity, and enormous volumes of engineering data. As the industry continues returning its focus to infrastructure lifecycle management, organizations have an opportunity to leverage decades of digital investments instead of beginning from scratch.

    Affordable AI copilots, standardized protocols such as MCP, and modern digital twin strategies are lowering the barriers to entry. Organizations no longer need to pursue massive transformation projects before realizing value. They can begin with the data they already possess, connect it intelligently, and expand over time.
