    On the Rails with AI

    The freight rail industry is one of the most critical yet often overlooked pillars of the global economy. In the United States alone, railroads move roughly 40% of long-distance freight when you measure it by 10 miles, transporting everything from agriculture products and chemicals to automobiles and consumer goods to so much more.

    V Krishnan, industry advisor for manufacturing and mobility, Microsoft, says, “Freight rail is this invisible backbone of the whole economy.”

    Also, its efficiency is unmatched. A single train can move a ton of freight roughly 400 miles on just one gallon of diesel, making rail one of the most cost-effective and fuel-efficient modes of land freight transportation.

    “If rail stopped moving, you would feel it everywhere within days. And it is incredibly efficient at what it does,” says V Krishnan.

    Despite the importance, the rail industry faces growing operational challenges. Rail operators are collecting enormous amounts of data from sensors, telemetry systems, asset monitoring, and network conditions, but much of that information remains trapped in disconnected systems.

    “Here is the frustrating part for a lot of operators. It is not that they lack the data. They are drowning in it,” says V Krishnan.

    AI (artificial intelligence) offers an opportunity to bridge this gap by identifying patterns, predicting equipment failures, optimizing schedules, and improving traffic flow. It gives operators the tools to make decisions across the entire ecosystem. Let’s look at two case studies of technology at work on the rails.

    CSX Doesn’t Dig for Data

    Consider the example of CSX, which transports more than 3.4 million carloads annually across a rail network of more than 35,000 track in the United States and Canada.

    The company wanted to give its customers a faster way to track freight, manage shipments, and access rail logistics services. Enter Microsoft Copilot Studio and Microsoft Foundry, which built an AI assistant that makes it easier to access information and services using natural language. Customers can ask to track a specific shipment, as one example.

    CSX went after customer experience, putting intelligence directly into customer-facing workflow. In the first 45 days of operation, more than 1,000 customers consulted the AI assistant across more than 4,000 conversations.

    “The railroads that move fast treat AI as a way to make the actual work better, not as a science project you run off in your corner and admire from a distance,” says V Krishnan.

    One of the big takeaways here is low friction entry points allow you to move quickly. Now CSX no longer needs to for data. That intelligence is readily available when employees need it.

    Rumo, Not an Information Gatherer

    Here’s another example: Rumo needed to ensure up-to-date access to operational information for its 1,700 train operators. With the help of Microsoft Copilot Studio, Azure AI, and SharePoint, Rumo built RUTI Maquinsta, which is an AI-powered app that delivers realtime validated information.

    Ultimately, response time dropped from four minutes to three seconds and about 4 kg of paper was eliminated per operator. The ROI (return on investment) was achieved in under two months.

    “They stopped being an information gatherer and they became a decisionmaker,” says V Krishnan.

    This is a great case of how to make institutional knowledge reachable, with the human staying in the loop the whole time.

    What’s Next for Rail

    As freight demand continues to grow and supply chains become increasingly complex, rail operators that embrace technology will be better positioned to improve reliability, reduce costs, and maximize network capacity.

    “The future of railroads isn’t going to be defined by a single piece of technology. It is a convergence of the data—which they have been generating for decades—the decisions, and the human intelligence into one coordinated system.”

    Turning operational data into actionable intelligence not only helps railroads operate more efficiently but also strengthens the resilience of the supply chain that businesses and consumers depend on every day. I’d call that a win-win-win.
