Driven by advances in automation, robotics, and material science, entire neighborhoods are now being built using large-scale 3D printers that can produce durable, energy-efficient homes in a fraction of the time required by traditional construction methods.
Consider the example of Cleora, a 55-acre residential development in Salida, Colo., which is designed to represent 3D printing at scale. The development is the culmination of nearly seven years of research into construction technologies, development strategies, and scalable housing solutions.
The project is intended to serve as a blueprint for how advanced construction technologies can support future residential development while addressing industry challenges related to labor availability, construction efficiency, and long-term scalability.
The project is moving from concept to reality. Currently, infrastructure is complete, seven homes are already constructed, multiple homes are sold, and additional homes are under construction. More than 65 homes are expected to use construction robotics and 3D-printing technology. Today, two autonomous robotics printing systems are operating in support of construction activities across the site.
Beyond construction, Cleora is also intended to serve as a workforce development hub for the next generation of construction professionals. Through a partnership with Colorado Mountain College, students will gain hands-on experience with robotics, 3D-printing construction technologies, and digital design software, helping prepare workers for careers in an increasingly technology-driven construction industry.
The rise of 3D-printed homes represents a fundamental shift in how the construction industry approaches housing production. While traditional craftsmanship and construction expertise will remain essential, success in the future will increasingly depend on integrating automation, digital design, and advanced manufacturing into the building process.
