    Turning Data into Decisions

    For years, contractors and project owners have invested heavily in technology—from project management software and ERP (enterprise-resource planning) systems to drones, connected equipment, sensors, dashboards, and now AI (artificial intelligence). Every new investment has generated more information.

    Yet despite this explosion of data, many construction organizations still struggle to answer fundamental questions: What is happening? Why is it happening? And perhaps most importantly, what should we do next? Simply, construction companies are drowning in data but starving for insights.

    Several trends are accelerating this transition. First, AI infrastructure investments continue to grow at an unprecedented pace. McKinsey & Co., has described the race to build AI data centers as a $7 trillion-dollar opportunity, underscoring the fact AI is not a passing trend but the foundation for tomorrow’s business operations.

    Second, agentic AI is beginning to redefine how work gets done. Instead of employees manually moving between multiple software platforms, AI agents will increasingly perform tasks across systems, automate workflows, and surface relevant information when it is needed.

    Gartner predicts up to $234 billion of enterprise application spending could be exposed to agentic arbitrage between now and 2030. Agentic arbitrage happens when AI agents complete tasks across multiple systems, reducing the need for users to interact with multiple traditional software interfaces. This evolution has the potential to change not only how technology is built, but also how organizations consume and ultimately pay for enterprise software.

    Third, digital workflows deliver measurable business value. The integration of BIM (building information modeling), digital twins, and other connected technologies help construction project teams improve collaboration, reduce rework, accelerate schedules, and so much more, with timeline reductions of up to 20%, according to Deloitte. Rather than simply digitizing existing processes, companies are creating smarter, more connected operations that improve construction project outcomes.

    Perhaps the most important trend, however, is the move toward decision intelligence. Leading organizations are shifting their focus away from asking, how can we collect more data? Instead, they are asking, how can we help our people make better decisions faster? That requires trusted data, connected systems, and AI capable of delivering meaningful, actionable insights.

    The next generation of industry leaders will be defined by who can transform data into timely, confident decisions. My advice is simple: Don’t ask your team if you need more information. Ask them which decisions are hardest to make every day. Then work backward. Identify the information required, where it resides, who owns it, and how AI can help deliver the right insight at the right time. Ask them what problems will they be willing to solve.

    In the years ahead, competitive advantage will belong to organizations that turn data into decisions—and decisions that lead to decisions that lead to actionable insights and positive outcomes.
